Y10 GCSE Portfolio Controlled Assignment: Working from home
What's the plan?
- In the section below we have uploaded information about your Y11 mock exam paper. We would like you to start work on this as soon as you can. We will give you a sketchbook for this project when we all return to school, but we would like you to start thinking, researching and planning work for this project now.
- When you come back to school we will give you a sketchbook for your mock exam project. We will continue working on this project in lessons and then sit a 5 hour mock exam in November of year 11 to produce a final piece for this project.
- After your mock exam we will return to your Human project and complete a final piece in lessons. Please remember to keep all of your work safe until you can bring it into school.
- if you have any worries or questions, please email your art teacher - [email protected] or [email protected]
MOCK EXAM PROJECT
For your mock exam project, we are giving you the current (2020) GCSE exam paper questions. These 'questions' are actually starting points or themes around which you will be building an art project in a new sketchbook.
There are 7 questions (or themes) - you need to choose one:
- Crowded
- Geometric
- Concealment
- Paper
- Moments in Time
- Out of the Ordinary
- Rhythm
The document below has more information for you about these themes, and about the kind of work we want you to be doing. Please take the time to read it carefully. You can download and print from here, but if you need a paper copy sent to you, please let us know by emailing us.
We know that working from home may not be easy, so we do not expect the same quality or quantity of work that you would achieve if you were in school. But it would be really valuable if you could choose your theme, start rough mind mapping, and start collecting research images over the next few weeks, at the very least.

Use the checklists below (and targets on the sheet at the back of your book) to find any gaps in your project for Assessment Objective 1 and Assessment Objective 3 and complete any missing work.
Next: Refine work by exploring ideas, selecting & experimenting with media, materials, techniques & processes
We would like you to work independently to refine your ideas until Friday 1st May.
A02 is all about refining your ideas towards a final piece by exploring different ideas further, experimenting with different art materials (eg. paper, pencil, pastel) and ways of working with them (eg. cutting, tearing, masking, smudging), and different art processes (eg. photography, collage, painting, printing).

What if you don't have art materials at home?
Sometimes having limitations can make artists even more creative! The following ideas and examples involve just paper, pencil, pen, scissors, glue, found objects and some unusual 'paints' like teabags and coffee granules.
